Caltrate (Calcium Carbonate) is a supplement intended for women who do not get enough calcium in their diet or need additional calcium. Caltrate may lower the rate of bone loss and help prevent osteoporosis. It is also essential for the heart muscles and nervous system to work normal. Caltrate contains Vitamin D that helps the body absorb calcium while the extra iron in Caltrate may help prevent serious deficiency in iron. Caltrate may help prevent serious bone disease especially later in life. Side effects of this supplement have not been reported in the past. Before starting to use this supplement, check with your doctor and take exactly as suggested on the package, because overdose may cause excessive levels of calcium in the blood or increase with chance of kidney stones. Take Caltrate tablets with meals daily, with light snacks and full glass of water or juice. Such foods, as rhubarb, spinach, whole cereals, bran, and daily products lower the absorption of calcium supplements. You should allow couple of hours in between taking Caltrate and eating food. Also, notify your doctor if you are taking any other medications because Caltrate and certain medicine should not be used together. For example, if you take any antibiotic, take your calcium supplement at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after you take the antibiotic. Some drugs such as Flosol, Cipro, Floxin may interact with Caltrate. You should seek for advice from your doctor on whether it is good to take calcium while pregnant or nursing. The usual dose of this supplement is 1 to 2 tablets daily. Keep away from light, heat, moisture, and children.
