Breast implant complications may happen, when a foreign object, such as a breast implant placed in the body. The frequency of getting surgical risks from this operation depends on surgical factors and individuals. Breast implant complications include: infection, hematoma, additional surgery, saline-filled implants risks, rupture, leakage or deflation, capsular constructure risk and others. The potential infection risks include insertion and removal of a breast implant and the need for prompt medical attention. Most infections appear soon after the operation is complete, but in very rare cases they may happen much later. Infections may be very serious and must subside quickly in order to avoid implant removal. Hematoma is a collection of a blood clot or blood from a blood vessel leak that may of happened within hours after operation in the pocket where the implant has been inserted, causing pain, bruising and swelling. Large hematomas must be drained surgically for proper healing. This type of draining may result in scarring, however it is minimal in most of the women. Additional surgery is a risk with saline-filled or gel-filled implants. Operation may be necessary to treat a major problem with implants, or to remove a implant which has ruptured and depending on the woman’s wishes, replace it. A current study showed that about 25% of women with breast implants experience adverse reactions resulting in surgery in the first 5 year period of time. Due to this study, women receiving breast implants for correction may expect about 1 in 3 chance of requiring a 2nd surgery within 5 years. Saline-Filled implants might be vulnerable much more to deflation as well as damage as opposed to gel filled implants. When a saline-filled implant deflates, it usually happens promptly. Surgery is needed to remove the ruptured implant and replace it depending on what the individual decides. While salt water is present in the body naturally, the individual’s body will also absorb the saline solution which was leaked from the breast implant instead of reacting to it in a way such like foreign matter. Rupture, deflation and leakage may happen in the first several months after breast implants are placed and some deflate after few years. MRI is used for evaluating individuals with suspected leakage, deflation or rupture. The chances of ruptures increase with breast injuries. Closed capsulotomy is a method used to break capsular constructive by squeezing the breast, has been also implicated as a possible reason of breast implant rupture. Implant manufacturers do not recommend closed capsulotomy.
