Botulism |
Details
|
Botulism is a medical disorder which results from ingesting food that consists of toxic substances produced by the bacterium, called clostridium botulinum. Such toxic substances paralyze muscles by inhibiting the relase of acetylcholine from the nerve. Various medications, specific insecticides (organophosphates), and the nerve gas used in chemical warfare may affect the neuromuscular junctions. Some of such substances prevent the natural acetylcholine breakdown after the impulse of the nerve has been delivered to the muscle. Very high doses of certain antibiotics may result in weakness in a similar way.
