Biaxin is an antibiotic prescription medication indicated to treat bacterial infections. This drug may also be used in combination with anti-ulcer drug to treat some types of stomach ulcers. Biaxin works by stopping the growth the bacteria. You should know, that this medication is prescribed to treat only bacterial infections. Side effects such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, headache, stomach upset, and changes in taste may occur while using Biaxin. If you have any of these symptoms, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Most of the people using Biaxin do not experience serious side effects. However if you have some types of serious side effects such as mental mood changes, hearing loss, irregular heartbeat, fainting, sore throat, fever, dark urine, yellowing skin or eyes, abdominal pain, you should immediately notify your doctor or emergency. Biaxin in very rare cases may cause a severe intestinal condition due to resistant bacteria. This may happen during the use of this medication or weeks after treatment is completed. In this case you should not use any pain drugs, anti-diarrhea medications, because these medications may make the symptoms worse. Promptly call your doctor if you develop stomach/abdominal pain, blood/mucus in your stool, constant diarrhea. Only a doctor will decide what treatment option is right for you. Serious allergic reactions such as itching, rash, severe dizziness, swelling, breathing problems may appear while using Biaxin. You will need prompt medical attention, if you experience any of them. Do not use this medication, if you ever had allergic reaction to it. Before starting to take Biaxin, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, some heart problems, mineral imbalance, or if you are pregnant. You should not combine Biaxin with other drugs such as ergot alkaloids, eletriptan, eplerenone, terfenadine, cisapride and other because they may affect each other and lead to serious complications. This medication may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This may cause pregnancy. Talk to your doctor for details. Do not overdose this medication. If you suspect overdose call emergency room or contact your local poison control center. Take Biaxin with or without meals, as prescribed by a doctor. To prevent upset stomach, you should take this drug with milk or food. Take this medication at the same time daily. The dosage depends on severity of disease and response to therapy. Do not stop using this drug without doctor’s permission. Do not give Biaxin to other people and store this medication away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
