Bentyl (Dicyclomine Hydrochloride) is used to treat functional irritable bowel syndrome, a condition in which abdominal pain, is accompanied by diarrhea, constipation and stress. While taking Bentyl, fever and heat stroke may occur during hot weather periods therefore it’s important to avoid heat while on this medication. Side effects such as dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, drowsiness, dry mouth, and headache may occur while using Bentyl. Do not use this medication if have ever had an allergic reaction to it in the past or if you are sensitive to tits ingredients. Only the doctor can determine the use of this drug in people with severe ulcerative colitis, blockage of the urinary tract, stomach or intestines, and glaucoma. Bentyl should not be given to infants under the age of 6 months, or to women who are nursing infants because it can produce blurred vision or drowsiness. You should be extra careful, while driving a car or operating any type of machinery while taking Bentyl. Diarrhea may be an early symptom of partial intestinal blockage, especially in people who had colostomy, illostomy, and bowel removal. If this occurs, notify your doctor as soon as possible. You should take Bentyl with caution if you have liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure; rapid, irregular heartbeat, hiatal hernia, and a nerve disorder. If Bentyl is used with other certain drugs such as Maalox, Tavist, Xanax, Digoxin, Proventil, Deltasone; the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. The usual recommended dosage is 160mg per day divided into 4 equal doses. Your doctor may recommend a starting dose of 80mg per day divided into 4 equal doses, because a higher dose may lead to significant side effects. Do not exceed your prescribed dose and use Bentyl as prescribed. You should store this medication in a tightly closed container, away from heat, moisture, and children.
