Benicar is a drug of antihypertensive group that is helping decrease blood pressure by blocking angiotensin 2 hormone, which is discovered in the person's body. Angiotensin 2 hormone is a substane that is constricting walls of the blood vessels, helping the arteries to become narrower and thus increasing blood pressure. Benicar is allowing artery to relax, so blood may flow more easily. When it happens, blood pressure is lowering and person's blood pressure can be kept under control. Benicar HCT consists of two different active drugs in just 1 tablet. By adding HCTZ(hydrochlorothiazide)-a diuretic or a water pill to Benicar, additional blood pressure decreasing can happen. Even more desirebale goals may be reached when hydrochlorothiazide(HCTZ) has been added to Benicar monotherapy. Benicar should be taken daily as prescribed by doctor with or without food. The person should not stop or start taking Benicar without doctor approval. Blood pressure should be checked regularly as directed by a doctor. Such side effect as dizziness occur in about 3% of people treated just only with Benicar. Benicar and Benicar HCT are used for hypertension treatment and can be taken alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Benicar HCT is not used for initial therapy and is used only if the blood pressure may not be controlled with only Benicar alone. Benicar HCT side effects may include upper respiratory tract infection, dizziness, and high levels of uric acid. Benicar HCT should not be used in people with serious kidney disease and in people who are sensitive to medications consisting sulfur or unable to urinate. Pregnant women should not use Benicar or Benicar HCT because these drugs are acting directly on the renin-angiotensin system and may result in injury and life-threatening condition to growing fetus. The person should never stop or start Benicar and Benicar HCT without doctor approval. It is not clear if this drug passes the the breast-feeding milk, but researchers found that Benicar at low amount secreted at low amount in the lactating rats milk. Breast-feeding mother must discuss with her doctor before starting take Benicar or Benicar HCT about risks and benefits. The drug should be stored at room temperature, away from heat, direct light, children, and pets.
