Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) is non prescription antihistamine, consisting of sedative and drying (anticholinergic) substances indicated for the treatment of allergic reaction. This medication was approved by FDA in 1946. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) is taken for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis, non-nasal or nasal different allergic disorders, such as seasonal allergic rhinitis, for the treatment of chronic urticaria, for preventing or treatment of motion sickness, and mild forms of Parkinsonism. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine is also used as an aid for the treatment of insomnia. Benadryl should not be taken with Vicodin, Darvon, Codeine, Probanthine, Bentyl, Urecholine, Inderal, Catapres, Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, Percocet, Valium, and alcohol, because they may interact each other. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) is used widely in pregnant females; the fetal deformities incidences are the same as in females, who are not using this medication. However Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) may be taken by pregnant females if the doctor suggests that is needed. Benadryl ( Diphenhydramine) is passing the human milk and if used it can cause seizures and stimulation in nursing baby, particularly in prematures and newborn. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) use must be avoid by nursing mothers. Benadryl's (Diphenhydramine's) side effects may include stomach distress, thickening and drying of oral secretions, sedation, disturbed coordination, tiredness, dizziness, and sleepiness. Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) can also result in nausea, appetite loss, low blood pressure, tremor, palpitations, double vision, irregular heartbeat, blurred vision, confusion, irritability, and nervousness. This medication must be taken cautiously in individuals, who have prostatic hypertrophy, asthma, hypertention,narrow-angle glaucoma, cardiovascular disorders, and hyperthyoidism. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is prepared in form of capsules of 25, 50, and Elixer: 5 mL (12.5mg) per teaspoon. Capsules of Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) should be kept at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, children, and pets. Effect is starting in appr. 1 hour after taking and lasting for four to six hours. If used as aid for insomnia, it should be used at bedtime. The dose is usually lowered for individuals over sixty years old. In overdose case, the person must immediately contact emergency room or local poison control center.
