Autologous transfusion is the safest blood transfusion where the donor is also the recipient because it eliminates the risk of blood-bourne disease and incompatibility. In some cases, when the individual undergoes a surgery or bleeds, the blood may be collected and given back. Usually, individuals donate the blood that will be given later back in a transfusion. For instance, in the month before having an operation, an individual can donate a few blood units to be transfused if required after or during the surgery.
