Arthroscopy is a type of procedure used to diagnose and visualize inside a joint to diagnose and treat problems of the joint. An arthroscope is a instrument the size of a pencil which contains a small lens attached to a miniature lightning and camera system which magnifies the joint structure. Arthroscopic Surgery involves a small incision in the skin of the patient where the arthroscope is inserted through the incision and then light is transmitted to the end of the arthroscope via fiber optics. The information about the interior of the joint is transmitted to a screen. After seeing the results, the surgeon can then determine the type of injury and if necessary, correct the problem. The most common joints examined using this device are: ankles, hips, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and knees.
