Anorectal abscess

Details

Anorectal abscess is a medical condition, in which accumulation of pus, which is resulted from bacteria which invades a space around the rectum and anus. Anorectal abscess just under the skin may be red, swollen, very painful, and tender. Frequently, a physician may see an abscess in the skin around the patient’s anus. A physician may feel rectum tender swelling by using a gloved finger, even when no external swellings may be seen. Abscess high in the rectum can result in no rectal symptom but can cause pain in the lower abdomen and fever. Treatment of anorectal abscess includes injecting a local anesthetic, cutting into the abscess, and draining the pus. Antibiotics have limited value except in individuals with fever, diabetes, and infections elsewhere in the person’s body. In some cases, an individual is hospitalized and is given local anesthetics before the surgeon cuts and drains the abscess. After the entire pus has been drained, an anorectal fistula (abnormal skin channel) can develop.
