Anal itching

Details

Anal itching or itchy skin around the person’s anus (pruritus ani) may be caused by many factors: 1. Antibiotics, especially Tetracycline; 2. Skin disorders including atopic dermatitis and psoriasis; 3. Microorganisms including bacteria and fungi; 4. Specific food including citrus fruits, beer, coffee, spices, Vitamin C tablets, and Cola; 5. Allergic reaction to chemicals in soap, different ointments, anesthetic preparations; 6. Anxiety – itch – anxiety cycle; 7. Poor hygiene that causes excessive rubbing; 8. Infestations by parasites including pinworms and sometimes lice or scabies infestations (pediculosis); 9. Liver or diabetes diseases, disorders of the anal such as cryptitis, draining fistulas, skin tags, and cancers such as Bowen’s disease; 10. Sweating because of hot weather, obesity, tight underwear, or pantyhose. Individuals with large external hemorrhoids can experience itching because the part is difficult to clean. After bowel movement, the anal part must be cleaned with absorbent cotton, which can be moistened with warm plain water. Frequent dustings with cornstarch or baby powder can combat moisture. Antifungal creams including Miconazole, soothing suppositories (for example Glycerin suppositoriums) and Corticosteroid creams can be used. Food that may result in anal itching should be avoided for a while to check if anal itching improves. Bad linens should be light and clothing must be loosed. If anal itching does not improve and a physician suggests cancer, a skin specimen can be obtained for testing.
