Amniocentesis is a type of diagnostic procedure which is performed by inserting a hollow needle into the uterus through your abdominal wall, withdrawing a small amount of fluid from the sac that surrounds a fetus. Amniocentesis is a test that is performed by ultrasound. Exact location of the fetus is determined. An anesthetic could be applied or a local anesthetic injection into the skin. You will not have to stay overnight for this medical procedure however you must have your bladder must be full before peforming ultrasound. During the test you may feel a sharp, stinging sensation. There could be some minor cramping after the procedure is done. Amniocentesis is a test that is done to determine chromosomal disorders (like Down's syndrome, spina bifida, anencephaly and rare metabolic disorders. Risks of this procedure include slight chance of infection or injury to the fetus, or a very small chance of miscarriage. Alternatives may be available and you should discuss it with your health care provider.
