Allergist |
Details
|
An allergist is the specialist who is trained in evaluation, laboratory and physical diagnosis and management of disorders that involve the immune system. Such medical conditions include anaphylaxis, asthma, eczema, rhinitis, and adverse reactions to food, drugs, and insect stings along with immune deficiency diseases (congenital and acquired), complications associated to autoimmune disease, defects in host-defense, malignance of the immune system or organ transplantation. As our understanding of the immune system begins to develop, the scope of this specialty widens. Training programs are available at certain medical facilities in order to provide the expertise in immunology and allergy, pediatric pulmonology, and adult rheumatology. Such individuals are candidates for dual certification. An allergist/immunologist requires two years in immunology-allergy or prior certification in internal medicine or pediatrics in addition to examination and training.
