Alimta is the only chemotherapy agent approved by the Food and Drug Administration in treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma when surgery is not an option. Chemotherapy is a treatment procedure with one or more anti-cancer drugs used to destroy cancer cells. Alimta stops the production of three enzymes which require to feed the cancel cell and works by interfering with a process that is crucial that allows cancer cells to spread or reproduce. MPM (malignant pleural mesothelioma) is a cancer of the linings of the lungs. When compared to Cisplatin, a large clinical study showed that Alimta improved the survival rate for patients with this rare cancer.
