Adenomyosis

Details

Adenomyosis occurs when the endometrium (lining of the uterus) grows into the muscular wall of the uterus and involves normal tissue growing in the wrong place. This medical condition frequently develops in the reproductive years between the ages 35 to 50. Women who have had uterine surgery are most likely to develop this medical condition. The symptoms of Adenomyous include pelvic pain, and painful menstrual periods. Menstrual cramps in Adenomyosis usually start several days before menstruation and become worse as the period continues. Some women with this disease have no symptoms at all. If symptoms of adenomyosis occur, the physician will perform a pelvic examination to check the uterus. In this medical condition, the uterus is sometimes soft and enlarged, but may not be larger than the size 12 weeks of pregnancy. To exclude a possible pregnancy and uterine fibroids in case if the uterus is enlarged, the female’s blood or urine should be tested for HCB (human chorionic gonadotropin) - a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy, and the woman will have an ultrasound examination. In some cases adenomyosis may not be diagnosed definitively until a hysterectomy is done. Adenomyosis in mild form may need no treatment and frequently disappears spontaneously after menopause. Severe menstrual cramps may be treated with antiprostaglandines drugs. If prolonged and painful periods turn to be intolerable, a woman will most likely wish to consider a hysterectomy. Gonadotropin releasing hormone - the synthetic hormone agonists may sometimes provide a non-surgical alternative to treat adenomyosis.
